We invite all of you to the Extraordinary Form Mass (Traditional Latin Mass) of Septuagesima Sunday on February 12, 2017. The Holy Sacrifice will be offered at 8:00 A.M. at the Mary Help of Christians Parish Church in Barangay Buhisan, Cebu City. Our Society’s musical arm, the Schola Gregoriana of Cebu, will be providing music.
The word septuagesima means “seventieth.” Septuagesima Sunday is the Sunday that falls within 70 days (but less than 60) before Easter. The Extraordinary Form calendar has a pre-Lent preparation period consisting of Septuagesima, Sexagesima (“sixtieth”), and Quinquagesima (“fiftieth”). Lent itself — called Quadragesima (“fortieth”) — begins on Ash Wednesday. Both Lent and pre-Lent are penitential periods, so the liturgical color is purple. The Alleluia and Gloria are suppressed in the Liturgy beginning Septuagesima Sunday. The Alleluia, an expression of great joy and jubilation, will not be heard again until the Easter Vigil. In place of the three-fold Alleluia chant between the Graduale and the Gospel, the Tractus (a long chant consisting of a series of verses from the same Psalm) is sung.
The pre-Lent period is no longer observed in the Ordinary Form calendar. Instead, the three Sundays before Lent are celebrated as Sundays Through Time (better known as Sundays in Ordinary Time).
How to get to the Mary Help of Christians Parish: At the corner of Jollibee Punta Princesa (Labangon) branch, ride a tricycle and inform the driver that you’re headed for Mary Help of Christians Parish.
